IBM's Wearable Computing Technology (WCT)

The goal of this research activity was to enhance the surveyor's work processes. Towards this end, we have employed technology from various sources.

During the years 1999-2000, DNV's Mobile Worker Project was selected as a test site for an exciting new technology - IBM's Wearable PC. The WCT consisted of a complete PC, however it is the size of a pack of cigarettes and did not weigh much more.

It consisted of a head-mounted color display and a variety of input devices such as: helm-mounted camera, belt-mounted keyboard, a handheld mouse and a microphone.

The brief video clips provide an impression of the working environments of our ship inspectors, some of whom have been test users for this exciting new technology.

IEEE Spectrum has an interesting feature story on this topic.
