In the beginning about 1982, the textbook was issued in parts as technical DNV-reports to serve the lectures at the Institute of Mathematics, University of Oslo, and at the Training Center of Det Norske Veritas. Work with the Elsevier edition went on from 1986 to 1991.

Printed material to reports as well as to the Elsevier edition was prepared on the Hell Photosetter at DNV (6000 dpi), with source text in TROFF-format and with mathematical equations in eqn-code. The same source files were used by the text-to-speech and keystroke editor in the telephone service operating about 1988 (the "Auto-Course").

Translation to HTML and implementation on WWW was mainly done in 1994-95. In this representation the equations are presented as gif-pictures, but with links to the TROFF/eqn-code for check of details. As in the Auto-Course, the eqn-code is also applied for speech rendering as well as for the WAP presentation of equations.

In the web-version of the textbook, greek letters and special symbols in the text are still written out by names. Likewise, a lot of numerical tables still appear in preformatted mode. Greek letters and table elements were not implemented on web when the conversion to HTML took place. Such things may probably be improved at a later stage.
